What Is Fayetteville Known For?
Fayetteville is most known for being a military town. The city has Fort Bragg, the largest military installation in the world by population. Fayetteville has long been recognized for its inventive bent, as an educational center, as the “Athens of the Ozarks,” and as a “hilly region” known for its seven hills around and within it.
Following two devastating events, citizens of Fayetteville banded together to restore their community. The fire was the first; it destroyed over 600 structures and caused widespread damage in 1831. Following the Great Fire, many of the famous buildings that we appreciate now were created.
The second occurred during the Civil War when Union troops led by General William T. Sherman approached the city. They burned the North Carolina Arsenal, a weapons and ammunition factory for the Confederacy, after wreaking havoc on the town and torching it. Once again, Fayetteville rose to the occasion to restore its city and morale.
The Current Fayetteville
Today, Fayetteville is a thriving city in the Sandhills region of southeastern North Carolina’s Cumberland County, which serves as the county seat. Raleigh, the state’s capital, is roughly 65 miles north of Fayetteville, and Charlotte, a major commercial center with a population of nearly 1 million, is about 200 kilometers to the west.
Fayetteville is adjacent to Interstate Highway 95, a major north-south thoroughfare that links the city with Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and New York to the north and Miami, Orlando, and Jacksonville to the south.
The city’s western section, including Interstate 15 and Interstate 40, will be directly linked to I-95 when the $54.5 billion project is completed in 2026. The Fayetteville Outer Loop – which encircles the city’s western edge and leads to I-95 – is presently under construction around the area, providing Fort Bragg with even more access to I-95. With a 39-mile outer loop, residents from this region will have unimagined access to transportation options.
Bypass construction on all major thoroughfares is expected to be completed by 2025. A high-rise building is presently being constructed adjacent to the stadium, a Hyatt Place hotel and a 110,000-square-foot office building, which are scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2021. Fayetteville is near Fort Bragg, one of the world’s largest military bases. The Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division have been stationed at the base, the US Army Special Operations Command and the 3rd Special Forces Group.
